As a point, I'll send folks to the beetle breeding mini-game from A Tale in the Desertas an example. One guild's image gallery from telling 4: https://www.atitd.org/wiki/tale4/Jade_Scarab#Pictures. A similar thing could be done with dog breeds if the time is taken to develop certain things. Question is how much time to dedicate to it, as simply using a fractal texture for the skin on a beetle isn't practical with a dog. I didn't play too far into it, but a game that came out in the late 90s with a couple sequels over the next 5 or so years, Creatures, featured this sort of thing.
