Actually, the specific reason I removed it was because of a bug where they'd crash the server by spawning to close to the edge, but the reason I didn't fix that bug and re-add tree growth was because I didn't like the mechanic.

As I said, though, I'm less invested in that idea now anyways, so I may consider bringing it back. If there's any argument I might put against it now, it is that I don't want to exactly duplicate the algorithm the mapgen uses to spawn trees, but also wouldn't want it to differ significantly from it, so that might be a challenge, but I'm sure there are ways to be found around that if I care enough about it.

I think that adding tree regrowth and further decay mechanics (for pavement for example) is important.
Some villages that are abandoned are wasting a lot of space. Abandoned ruins might be fun at first, but as the world goes on, the map gets too filled with them.
Also, over time people chop trees, there might be large areas with none or small amount of trees. These areas are very difficult to settle to, because you would have to bring the wood from lands far away, as growing is not option in the early game, due to costs and time requirements.

Sure there may be some areas without people settled in the immediate vicinity and trees still remaining around the area. But there will still be lots of mostly abandoned places nearby, which kind of ruins the mood for the whole game.
Instead of spawning in the harsh wilderness, you are surrounded by lots of ruins, a dead game.
