Dieing isn't that bad anymore anyway , especially with kingdom burial.
I"ve stopped personally when I died totally drunk 1y ago but it was more an excuse than anything else.
I was playing too much and starting to get bored anyway ( maybe burnout?).
I'm sure there are plenty of person like me.

Coming back in hnh isn't easy , especially when you're so behind , the world semi abandonned.
You don't have that feeling of exploring and conquering a new world , starting from scratch , it's less exciting.
HnH requires a ton of time and effort , I can understand to not want to commit that hard without the perfect conditions.

That being said , I came back 1 months ago or smthing , doing quite good and obviously play way too much :p

I know it might shock some of you but the motivation of these persons is probably not as black and white as you seem to think.

Motivations are always black and white, even if sometimes severely convoluted. It's in trying to read the motivations of others without sufficient verbal or written communication that things get all muddied up.

Additionally, people also put too much on "being behind." The fact is that you are behind day one of a new world if you're not a part of one of the power gaming villages. Great advantage of a developed world is that you can trade for higher quality started materials and you have a much easier time of developing your own characters.

People just like making excuses instead of expressing what they really feel.
Opinions expressed in this statement are the authors alone and in no way reflect on the game development values of the actual developers.

I like to walk through the ruins of the world. wonder whom the players were, where they are now. How did things get to be as they are. Every place is a story and sometimes, with what's left behind, you can fill in the blanks. Plus scavenge the left overs. Good enough for the cockroach, good enough for me.

I call bullshit on that. Always.

If You're not a part of ANY GROUP, You're already behind, as pointed out by example as LadyGoo: the group will likely for example collect candle berries faster to build up mines and stuff than small groups or solo players.

Or when large groups kills bears in first 30 minutes. (not mentioning cheesing mammoths in first 48h)

By the way, You can participate in rat race as long as: You're in a coordinated group, You know what to do, have luck to find and claim nodes and power quest and later, have luck with crops RNG and stuff. Bots increase the chance a lot, but don't make You automatically the winner. It's the biggest excuse that will ever exist.

you can cheese a mammoth solo with a fresh spawn by glitching it on terrain... being in a co-ordinated group still will NEVER match a bot village. simply because, humans need to sleep and a bot does not. Not to mention other life commitments like work and family. its not the "biggest excuse that will ever exist" its LITERALLY the reason the people who have the highest quality shit have them, because they run botting villages. "Bots increase the chance a lot" no, bots just increase everything. That's literally the point of a botting village, to do all the tedious shit that everyone else has to do manually so you can just do whatever you want. Like botting pepper, food, pies, crafting, mining, metal spiralling.

You know what else collects berries faster than a group of humans to build mines and stuff than "small groups or solo players"? a bunch of harvesting bots.

Problem is, you can't remove bots while you have an open source client. And you can't make the client closed source while the default still misses out a bunch of basic features in every alternative client that just make the game infinitely more user friendly and just a better overall experience.

But you can remove the characters/accounts that benefit, to the point that users stop using automatons.
Some meteor impacts or plagues (memories of pain, anyone?) could be fun events for the rest to watch...
