This. Maybe another more primitive boat type could be added. Easier to make, but crappier.

Well, an easy feature we could add to boats would be to make them not stationary .... add them some momentum, inertia, so they keep going for a while in the direction you were going, also if no input is given, boats will tend to float around slowly in a random direction.
Make friends with the other crabs or try to escape the bucket.

Maybe another more primitive boat type could be added.

You could just make logs float and let us float with them across rivers and lakes.

Jorb did talk briefly once about making tar a requirement for boats.

Personally I think a rework should be a little more involved as a whole than just "add another requirement" to the mix.

Introduction of a log cutout boat would be a start.
Introduce initial acceleration to boats, taking a few seconds to reach maximum speed, and turning reducing said speed briefly.

Also perhaps have strength be a mechanic involved, with the more you have the less your stamina drains from using it. Boats are great for transportation historically, but until we started adding sails to them, simple rowing could be rather tiring.

Boats have absolutely no downsides, they are too OP. They must be nerfed.

For example, make them more expensive to build and maintain (tar)
Add some stamina drain for rowboats and such.

Perhaps some kind of currents should also be added to rivers, so it would be more difficult to move upstream than downstream, though this may require a world reset.

Disagree, but I do think there should be more reason to use wagons. Rarely ever see them used or even built, and the only time I used one was to leave a village and settle my own in w9.

What game are you guys playing that rowboats are used as the main form of transportation? I only see people teleporting on roads and charter stones. Water transportation should be buffed, not nerfed.

You could go around it, or then accept that there are some natural obstacles too great for hearthling to pass.
