Ya know, for all that most of this shit happens on the forums, I for one would not turn down having a newspaper show up in my mailbox now and then, I'd even leave some kind of something for the guy delivering it!

The only downside I see to this is the big tomes would likely be used to only teach alts crafting materials. New players would either want to discover things on their own, only want something they can't figure out, or need at the present moment.

That's not even a downside, really. People already use recipes to teach alts crafting materials, they just leave the recipes in chests instead of having them in neat little tomes. It's not useful just for alts, either. Having to re-learn all the crafting materials when you die is a huge pain in the butt.

Agree. There is a guy complaining in realm public chat about dieing by drowning accidentally and how much trouble it is for him to relearn all the recipes.
And I have been through this myself in the early days... or after getting killed in pvp
