Let's make it obnoxious, and use street lamps, make street lamps non-decay, and those prevent roads from decaying in a certain radius of the street lamp, also required for the street lamp to prevent decay that they must be equipt with a "lit" with a candle or linseed oil and a wick, candles could be upgraded from what ever current time of consumption to 24 rl hours, or conversly the lamp could be filled with linseed oil and a wick to last 72 rl hours

TBH, a road should decay faster the more it gets used. and there could be more than one type, Dirt path ( Uses dirt to construct), gravel (Uses stone), cobblestone(Also uses stone but requires more than gravel). You could also have them limited to the signpost. So woodenpost would be dirtpath and gravel and cobblestone would be Stone signpost. Building the road, and upkeep could be done at the signpost itself. Requires X amount of dirt or stone to connect Signpost x to milemarker x. in order to keep the road in good repair you just visit the signpost every once in a while and repair the road for x amount of materials

Any road paving material not decaying will undoubtedly result in gigantic swastika roads and other ugly things. -1

My previous post was bad. What meant to say was to implement non-decaying gravel pavement that you can't build on and is mono-color.

Ancient Romans used oil lamps filled with vegetable oil in front of their houses and had special slaves whose only duty was to take care of those lamps, to light them, extinguish them and watch that they always have oil.

Street Lamps aren't that much of a stretch (First introduced in 1412)

yerr... I was just being a butt with that one. I forget when they were first introduced. The Egyptians and Greeks lit their courtyards and such just to make it easier for watchmen to spot would be thieves. A lit courtyard or house isn't a streetlamp, though, even if the street is lined with houses. Even today, we don't light roads outside of cities.

I still like the idea of having to construct a path in order to build a road. build the signpost and a ghost mile marker appears at the end of the road which is the UI for extending the road or turning it 45- 90* and to extend it requires what ever resources you're using to build the road either dirt or stone. inorder to finish the road you would build the endpoint signpost. building more than one road on the same road would be the same but only cost resources when you turn off the road already constructed.

I still feel roads should decay and require resources to upkeep but having a system like this would make it significantly easier to upkeep. it would also axe the milemarker spam that would be everywhere. thoughts?

Make it so pavement near roads only decays when said roads are not actively used.
