I've always thought that raw cave walls shouldn't ever give a cave in. Solves this problem since soon as you break it you get the minesweeper info.

Downside would be that one could fully sample all cave wall tiles, only limited by energy (and hardness).
I think that would be a bit too far on the cheap side, so a structure that attaches an additional cost as tradeoff to preventing cave-ins that can't be detecte through minesweeper would make more sense.

People already get that as is. It's still more efficient to use rustroot late game, early game people are alt abusing to do it. I don't really want to see a structure in caves every 10 tiles. It doesn't seem like an elegant solution to this issue at all. I'd rather let people "prospect for free" and not have them dent the walls at all. Maybe tell you what the rock is and if the tile's stable. Would also stop you from needing to pave mine areas constantly to mark dust (or using clients to do that for you).

The current mechanic is needlessly punishing. It doesn't serve any real purpose.

Simply because playing the blindfolded cave-in slot machine when initially breaking cave walls isn't a good mechanic, IMHO.

i mean its really not that complicated of a mechanic. if you can grasp basic minesweaper youve got a hold on mining in this game. its just that like minesweeper, make a mistake once and you lose the entire game.

You like to shitpost every thread with your inaccuracies don't you?
First time I say something but I spotted at least 5 non sense the last 2 days.
1) the very first tile without support is luck based.
2) sometimes you don't have other option than to try your luck all adjacent tiles being a potential cave in.

i base my knowledge on in game experiences, not what people randomly user edit into a wiki because the actual devs cant be bothered to give proper in game explinations and the only way to find out how something works is to dig up years old forum posts where they will tell the actual way things work at some random point in the thread, but not the OP stating the features of the update. i have literally never had a cave wall break on me unless its ore type was already known by mining adjacent squares.

Then you either havn't broken enough cave walls or you're insanely lucky.

Cave decay should take care of that, with time.

can't get past the first 6 posts in this thread before im upset people are missing the point

supports costing just an obscene amount of wood blocks would be a good thing. do you guys actually think people want to haul endless logs in to their mine past their bare minimum requirements?

notice how literally nobody built the inferior mine supports (wood) when they could do the superior (stone) ones and this was even back when you could just road tele for free with a cart full of logs.

+1 to dirt cheap bare minimum support just to prevent you getting flat murdered when you're trying to get your shit together to get some metal

I think I will rather see some thing like a worse version of miner's helmet that do not cost metal.

I will admit, I have never build it because I think it seem quite useless with cost of metal. Maybe then just make miner's helmet not cost metal?

Needs metal, which you don't have at the beginning.
