I'm against the idea of a desk you carry in your pocket or personal inventory. But yes, while in a wagon or knarr, where a normal study fits perfectly, it should work.
Nomadic in real history was actually 2 life styles:
1) Either born nomadic, in a tribe, having nothing but your life (no claim) your horse and your bow and arrows, not even knowing how to plant a crop and not caring about it. Those would never have a study desk or an anvil and would never mine for metals and this is right. That is why they got extinct, and that was also right.
2) Rich people, having a big claim in the world with everything in it and servants (including study desks) would choose to "see the world" for a few years or send their children (alts) to do it. Those would travel in comfort and would gain LPs while traveling. But they would not travel without some vehicle having enough inventory to carry a study table, a simbel table and chair, possibly a meat grinder and cauldron for new meals, etc. They are not some savages.
For both roles, study table should stay an object not a backpack as it is, but it should work in vehicle inventory.
