I'd rather have a new kind of cargo ship, with less crew space and the ability to carry larger objects (like wagons) and livestock.
Why have only 1 large ship when you can have 2!

Also no, horses swimming would be an awful idea.

perhaps make new type of rivers on w12 where a horse is able to cross certain rivers which are not too deep where a player would need to swim on his own already and a type of river that is too deep even for a horse
