To encourage players to trade?
I think that was the idea, but I also think they underestimate how basic metal is to established villages. I know this is hyperbole but It's like saying wood should be regional to encourage trade. No, that means people living without wood are screwed or at least heavily inconvenienced. Unlike wood though, you can't know what you're settling on top of until it's a week in.

No matter what you think, you never want to find heavy earth. My 2 stockpiles = 0 bars once, never again. Heavy earth is a glorified rock.

Budzilla's post is what I'm referring to. I have maybe 15 chalco veins opened, 2 heavy earth. Mined out the 2 tin nodes and 2 iron ochre nodes, both of which totalled maybe 5-10 tiles each and were very far from where I live. This is too regional, waaaaay too regional. Live in a copper/tin only area? No one's going to trade you enough iron to spiral ever. Two people I've heard now their L3 and lower is nothing but galena. The quantity of nodes is fine, the variety is the problem.

See above.
