Make the lock pick-able and you have a good idea. If it needs to make sense why you cant pick it up, add some rope the the recipe and make people lock it to a tree/stone/stump.

The guy that got your boat is having fun.

More people suffer when they can be stolen easily.

That's mitigated by both players needing to be anxious/limited in activity because it takes 3 seconds to steal their boat.

you can at least lock a container slot, but that's all i think

Well, if you want realism, its a wrong game for you. We have knarr locks for example, how are they done? Lots of chain around the ship? I dont think so.

This change would be convenient and useful for many.

Anyway there should be some logic in actions.

You don't suggest to make lock for horses, right ?

as for now, horse can be leashes...
if you want to make safe boat -> you can leash it with chain to a tree, and make lock for chain

this is what i do IRL, when i need to go ashore from boat, leash it to the tree

Doesn't the branding iron make taking a horse leave a theft scent? (I could be crazy but I thought that's what it did aside from the credo)

Arguably making someone leave a theft scent for the boat would probably be plenty if we're talking equivalents.

I don't like the idea of a lock sealing away ability to lift a rowboat. We have plenty of liftables that can be locked (chests, anyone?).

Rowboats are relatively cheap and with enough effort you can mass produce them.

I think the lock should also apply to liftables in the boat, its just too easy to take them currently.

No. Knarr is a bigger, better, MUCH more expensive version of that and it doesn't have it.

If you start making small things like this safer you keep losing more thrilling moments from the game and it becomes boring.
I would say the joy of getting a free boat with possibly loot inside outweighs the sadness a normal person feels when they lose a boat.
Making tar kilns is not that hard and you are encouraged to make them now anyway with coalers cough.

A Q10 wood lock only takes seconds (not minutes or hours) for a fresh alt to pick. You really don't start getting real security until you hit the metal locks, and you are putting the effort to put a good lock on your row boat, you deserve the extra security it provides.

If you are out hunting/foraging and you get out of your boat to kill or forage, there is literally no way of getting back at somebody who takes your boat.Stealing your boat is almost instantaneous, they go faster than you, have no stamina drain, can teleport away, and can cross large bodies of water because they are in a boat, and you just lost yours. They don't even drop a a sent. You just get to watch them sail away. It isn't fun or exciting, it just sucks. If they had to pick a lock, you could at least TRY to stop them, making the whole thing much MORE fun and exciting.

Right now I will slowly crawl to that rustroot carrying my boat, because I must be on guard at all times for boat theft. This makes forging less fun for me, but is completely necessary. Adding a lock would give me a false sense of security, rather than take 30 seconds to be completely safe, I would trust the lock. This means the chance of you having your fun and exiting boat theft goes up. So not only does it make the boat theft itself more exciting, it makes the theft more likely to occur.

If you really like boat theft, then you should be rooting for this proposal!

This whole situation has been an ongoing problem since forever, but since it only matters when the population density is high, nothing is ever done about it
