It's New York not New Amsterdam...
New Amsterdam was a dutch settlement, hence the name. When it became English, the name was changed.
Same goes for Istanbul and a bunch of other cities that changed name after being taken over by a different ruler / nation.
City names have never been changed "just because"; it was always the consequence of some great change, it being a new ruler or the town being rebuilt from scratch after being destroyed. Cities keep their names for centuries, not weeks.
That being said, name changing would bring no benefit to the game, but it would bring more chances for abuse and confusion. It being free, linked to authority, or linked to different law speakers, it doesn't really matter; it would still be easy to change name every other week if you wanted to.
I have another suggestion instead, to solve the "what if you make a mistake" problem. Let the Lawspeaker change the village name during the first 24/48 hours from it being founded. That would give you plenty of time to fix any typo or change your mind, without making any other problem.
