Well, I look at the setting as sort of realistic (ish) world with some bullshit added by herthlings as how they would tell others of their deeds (which is pretty much what all the myths are). Hearthlings are plain stupid (just look at that face) and don't have wide imagination. So when it comes to inventing their own heroic deeds and monsters it's not dragons but just bigger version of everyday encounters (ants, beavers, bats dungeons make much more sense then). And from such angle alive slime living in a cave is sort of ok...
