Good point, but you're already picking up and mousing over. However, dropping it is what I do with 90% of it I find, anyway, so is it that big a deal to drop it after you "count" it? It'd be a change to get used to that'd be a huge pain in the ass (and probably the head for a bit), but if overall behavior of the game was this base, I'm sure we could adapt.
There are mining strategies where people mine a line of known safe tiles, then mass-pick the dust along that line (which is put into the inventory on a first-free slot basis) to then be able to mouse over in reverse order of pickup to get the quantity to color code the unstable tiles using pavement.
This is way less clicky than having to pick up each dust one by one and would be gone in case auto-stacking on pickup would happen.
The ability to stack stuff already in an inventory (through the flower menu, as suggested) would not only solve OPs issue but also be useable in any item grid container, without taking away not-stacking for the ones who like it.
