One problem is that this locks you from progressing while you've just spawned and looking around for place to settle. Unless you're willing to build and abandon a new table+chair everytime you want to eat few berries.

Recipe for table and chair could be made cheaper or a new cheaper one could be added, that could be made from branches and bough.
New players do not even know what strength etc. are, so it's not an issue to them. Especially as there can be a quest which guides you to build a table.
