It's always been annoying to have to do that every time, though, so having the game just share that info between different PCs would be a welcome improvement.

You can, sure, but it's not the same as having player account information cached server side. I'd probably had been a bit more vigilant about backing it up myself had I not realized how valuable the information could be, but that's the difference between running solo and running with a village.
Opinions expressed in this statement are the authors alone and in no way reflect on the game development values of the actual developers.

I had a drive failure and lost it all last summer. 100% killed my desire to play as I had a ton of information marked up: friendly traders in my area, neighbors, a wide variety of fish (with qualities) from doing fisherman credo, all of the places I had prospected for different ores (which also included interesting rock types for curios or construction color), animal and foraging quality locations, quality of natural resources.... It was six months of work that disappeared and that is only stored locally. it probably didn't help that I was 3/4 of the way through the gem hunter credo, and that was what was really driving my sessions at the time. Without the saved data of what gems I had found where, it was like I was starting over at square one.

I'm sure storage isn't a concern. We're talking a few MB per account.

Probably far less than that, given that the actual information is probably bits.
jorb: I don't want *your* money. You are rude and boring. Go away.
Sevenless: We already know real life has some pretty shitty game mechanics, it's why we're here instead.
Avu: The end is near it has finally come to pass: I agree with Lunarius...
Shubla: There are also other reasons to play this game than to maximize your stat gain.
