Real benefit is not supporting the realm that forcibly covered You.

Yeah, it is easier to say then done but with how "bad" current drag&drop(&bot) cancer spreading realm works, if You do not have anybody (as in other faction) to help You break out and cover, packing yourself seems a bad idea if, let's say, You have a deep mine and whole industry set up. Not to say that building up your realm might be as well hard if your location is covered in several cairns that are hard to break.

Or just being quiet and enjoying the buffs (if any) and let them sip that sweet delicious xp.

That's kinda the whole point of realms, just like kingdoms and such worked IRL. You should be greatful that the "xp tax" you pay to them is actually a free bonus, and they don't really drain your xp or lp.
You have the same options as you would IRL. Ask for another realm to help and cover you, or move away.
Also as someone pointed out, u can just move underground and most likely they won't cover you.

The issue I see here is that if You want to combat actively that realm You either have to get out or join another realm to be able to fight back. If You spread your kingdom like a cancer cell and take over a huge part of land, You're gonna have a lot of fuel to work with.

Same reasoning why alts/weak players dont deserve special protection because it will just be abused for grief
