You don't HAVE to. Many objects in fixed perspective isometric cameras are only 2D sprites. Take Diablo 2 as a good example. Only character models were 3D rendered (but were still simply animated sprites in the client.) Other games have used 3D objects so lighting, morphing, and texturing can be performed on them for more visual candy.

I don't think it's a question that haven could be more visually pleasing if you could consistently require limits on the camera. But there are already attempts at pretty in the regular cam/lighting settings that everyone just immediately turns off in custom clients. It's a casualty of the policy that custom clienters are allowed to do their thing.

TBH changing the game's perspective is just going to piss off whoever likes the current perspective and cause drama for the developers.

It is unfortunate the game used to be isometric and changing that has annoyed those with a preference for isometric. However changing it again will annoy those who prefer the new perspective and take up a hunk of developer time. I don't think it's worth it.

Also I'm totally biased for the current perspective due to the aforementioned pretty trees.

Still doesn't stop it from feeling like a gimmick and making the game clunkier.
Early world exploit: Put your hearthfire inside a cave, then hold shift to position a claim right in front of a cave. After 8 hours the claim will be unbreakable. Since your hearthfire is inside the cave, you can still get back inside, and leave, but nobody will be able to enter, effectively making you unraidable for the first 3-7 days. Enjoy

In your opinion. I don't miss hiding behind trees on default client. I love spinning the camera around on a beautiful plot or landscape.
