The darkness mechanics was actually one of my favorite things about Salem, to be honest. It doesn't work as is in Haven, of course, since there's a day/night-cycle here, but clearly the idea of having civilized/uncivilized areas predates Salem since that mechanic existed in Legacy, and I've considered various ways to bring something like it back. Haven't managed to think of anything good enough yet, but it's something I like to revisit every once and again, and I hope to be able to figure something out eventually.
The idea of a hard line around the edge of the world that serves as a gate for difficulty increase could probably be implemented in haven pretty directly
imagine a world very similar to the current one where the ocean extends outwards for many many grids, eventually turnings in to a scattering of small "darkness islands" around an outter perimeter. OR maybe even lower cavelevels that are not meant to really be mined, but mainly foraged and explored, filled with dangerous animal spawns. Basically implementing a more endgamey PVE bridge to the game.
