What if the antler pickaxe was the same, functionally, as a real pickaxe of equivalent Q, but it broke after a somewhat random number of tiles, so it only served as a temporary reprieve from how awful stone axe mining is. Like a short-medium length early-mid-game mining boost that's an item. Make the recipe take maybe three antlers, glue, whatever so it's not completely trivial.

I do kind of agree with Shubla that adding a Proper intermediary step between axe and pickaxe would remove a pretty big, like, feel good progression jump from the game. For new players, is mostly what I mean.

What I posted is supposed to be in line with something like how you can use clovers to get milk/wool before you domesticate, but only in a pretty limited fashion.

Could work. Would be kind of weird as one of the only tools to actually break tho. I personally wouldn't really mind if non metal tools broke, as the materials used to make them are plentiful and readily available. But that could also give a false expectation that even metal tools would break eventually.

This world my group hunted deer as a group in the first few days. We had massive trouble finding copper so did not have hard metal for awhile. This addition would make luck less of a factor to progress.

All this talk of making it breakable and effect mined stone/ore Q is overcomplicated imo. The suggestion is good as is and if we want to talk about about tools breaking or effecting quality I think it would be better to do so in the context of changing every tool. This game lacks consistency between a lot of its systems as is and I think pickaxes being the only tool with this weird middle-child is another trip to the ole' wiki for a new player.
Boofing and gumping it all damn day. Shoutout to my homeboy Moloch
