I felt like they all started going straight into different directions, running in circles would indeed be fun and better overall.

Only make chickens start running when you kill one in range of other chickens

A better solution would probably be to implement some basic flocking behavior i.e. they stay as a flock but run away as a flock, with single members keeping away from you but quickly regrouping when possible, much like how flock animals behave IRL (I know, realism is a shit argument, but it'd be less annoying to chase and look cooler)
Adding this would potentially make it easier to implement flocking/herding in other animals too, like the reindeer, wildgoats, mouflon/aurochs. Along with new animals like penguins or migratory birds. I always thought it was a little odd that wild herding grazers spawned alone.
Could be a PITA to implement though.

Just to prove shubla wrong.... I logged in briefly earlier, and went chicken (and bat?) hunting. I didn't stay on for long, but chased down a couple of flocks. They did all start going the same direction as I approached them--away from me. However, as I started getting in the middle and catching them, they started scattering. Works pretty much like RL from my RL experiences.

And no, they weren't too hard to catch. I filled my backpack up pretty damn fast. Given their tendency to wander while catching them before, it wasn't much different this time. Definitely took a bit longer, but not hard.

Also not a character with the forager credo, yes?

This is the sort of thread that will make Loftar give them the ability to hide in trees

Sorry. Did forget to mention that. I did have forager credo. Walk was fast enough to actually catch them with the minor speed boost. I'll try again on a fresh spawn (assuming it doesn't get ate by bats!)

edit: ok, out of a flock of about six chickens, I caught two. Rest ran off screen in the time it took me to get the two on a fresh spawn. Forager is going to be 5 quests at the start of the world... just putting that out there. I don't anticipate having issues.

Really there should just be a distance they try a keep away from you.

like 5-8 tiles. once out of range they just go back to flocking.
would be funny to get angry chickens sometimes, where if you pick a chicken up there is a chance the other chickens agro you and don't flee.

5 quests and 10k lp, you're doing something wrong if you can finish forager before you encounter a flock of chickens/erect a pali
