First things to check before settling and starting to level 3x grids: burrows, wellsprings and sand.

You can bash burrows, though, and sand usually already presents you the problem of "Why are you this close to water?"

Pen a moose against with pali and let them dry, the moose can bash the wellspring

Hell, just allow a wrecking ball to work on them, or if you need a lore friendly way to 'plug it' make it so if you use like 1000 soil on it, it clogs up
