Clearly the effort to make the axe should be much, much greater than is portrayed in game, and that chopping down a tree is easier than knapping the axe head.

What about the stones being of right type? Surely you can't expect to make stone axe from any stone, we must restrict the stones into those that are known to produce good durable axes. Those that do not shatter too easily.

Allowing any string would mean getting higher q axes way faster, with hide straps. Or with flax / hemp.

No it's not. It's already pretty stupid how stone axes are the highest q axes anyone can get for most of the game, making other tools situational (metal axes and butcher knives, but also pickaxe to an extent). Giving them another boost just makes it worse.

to be honest you do not even need stick to make a stone axe it just makes it easier to use it you can just use the normal Stone to chop down a tree it will just take a long time

sure would be nice if we were able to equip stones and be able to chop downs trees with that at slower rate, but I think not many would do it because of how easy it is to make stone axe
