Sure, but that means a knarr can withstand 1+ hour (I've never timed it, it's a lot though) of deep ocean travel before needing repairs. I don't think it'd be a fun or healthy mechanic to make whalehunting a multiple hour long venture as the minimum time investment. Presumably you wouldn't find them instantly either.

I presume the damage is the same through all the ocean, or roughly the same? Maybe that's what doesn't combine well with sea vessels of different durability.

Agree. OTOH, I'm afraid a ship that doesn't need repairs after experiencing an hour of bad weather... doesn't quite fit the game (with much less world scale) either.
