Maybe I am wrong but I feel like the idea of trolling and griefing was WAY more prominent in legacy. Back when PVP was maybe a bit more taboo because even the most competent titan could be sieged and summoned when he finally decided to sleep.
I remember, as a new player, having the ability to fuck with people in this sort of trolly way was a genuine tool in my arsenal. I had it done to me and I did it to others and nobody was complaining, the devs were not moderating it.
I woke up to sieges that included literally 2000 signs posts, dozens of alts and outrageous abuse of silly mechanics, but this was 100% normal.
Nobody has ever once been concerned about griefing until the idea of opt-in PVP was brought to the table.
Bringing it up as a rebuttal to PVP is dishonest.
The "why not just private server" argument is also dishonest.
The idea of massive online multiplayer games with optional PVP is more common than open world PVP. People still like to play together with strangers and friends in MMOs.
It seems like nobody can really give a truly honest and meaningful argument against it.
