Clapping will only exhume more co2 and heat which should make more midges spawn and become more interested in you.

I think the human body generate a lot more heat passively, and the heat created by the kinetic energy of clapping will be completely unimportant. It is logical that reducing the number of living creatures around you will also reduce the number of midges.

Speaking out of personal experience here, I'm sure it doesn't help.
