I honestly think that details such as these ARE what make this game fun. I think it's really neat that exploration is such a driving force behind progression and how many of the existing mechanics interact with each other to create a sense of depth and purpose.
The issue with mechanics like this is the exploration phase for a player is very short, while the lasting impacts are permanent. That's why you have to be really careful adding penalties as a result of content added to make exploring interesting compared to rewards. The 5 minutes of "oh neat I need light" delivered through a debuff you make go away doesn't outweigh now needing to constantly lug around/refuel lights.
I think you'd get along with lunaris.
