There's a lot of room for thoughts here.
I like the concept of realms as something small villages have goal to become after they progress, so they are motivated to grow bigger, stronger, more experienced.
But the way things are now don't represent that person/people founding one, have progressed in game better than to acquire gold/silver and bot steel, which is not really a huge achievement.
Also! Still, even with all the little changes and fixes to warflags, a single fight over them did not happen, which is very talking for itself. System clearly needs improvements. Realms gameplay is awful, the shortest story to prove it: taking over someone’s coronation stone with your realm does nothing at all. It is broken. Doesn’t stimulate pvp in the slightest.
I disagree with “It's also unrealistic for many small realms to actually acquire the necessary buffs”. The only reason they can be disabled from it would be that they planned to make a dummy realm to start with, or ego-boosting realm to be a king/queen of nothing. If they don't want bother buying/collecting materials for making good buffs for the people they cover (for themselves in the first place obv), why else bother? F* them. And if they don’t compete for lands with monolites/irminsuls they obviously are not on the stage to enroll realms gameplay yet. But then again it’s broken anyways. Things aren’t working the way they most likely should be.
And this is how we come to another bad side of realms: good buffs are the main and only fair reason to create a realm. When the genuine target would better be to unite local players, create competitive mood between different groups. So if you remove or nerf buffs there will be no profits left to pursue. Fighting for the “name” and LARP is cringe and no one will bother because its rather humiliating to show that you care to tag lands with your stupid name, which doesn’t even represent your capability or power, only that you either bot or able to afford buying steel.
So removing OP buffs = removing realms, but will it really be that good? Remember, how realms and spiraling made noobs worth of keeping alive? Though I don’t like the idea for people who aren’t interested in realms gameplay to be forced to move or forced to reach realm holders to lift their industry cap, doesn’t sound fair. In a good realm it slightly pushes hermits to trade or cooperate with realm owners, cool, but if they were unlucky and got covered by a dummy realm they are doomed to have bad industry because owners aren’t interested.
