haven's development cycle:
1) Make something vaguely fun & simple
2) Over-complicate it for no reason
3) Recognize that everybody hates it now
4) Add a bandaid that just makes it more complicated
5) The bandaid usually makes it better, but still worse than just reverting to the original or removing the feature - and sometimes makes it catastrophically worse
6) Justify development being bad """slow""" by saying "we're just two people", ignoring that fact most of Haven's problems are caused by bloat or failing to admit when something just doesn't work
7) repeat 3, 4, and 5 a couple times before giving up forever and moving on to add bloat somewhere else

I genuinely believe if Haven had a competitor that was just Haven but with all the obviously bad features removed and replaced by nothing it'd kill the original

They do a lot more work than people give them credit for. the issue has NEVER been resources.

The majority of people would probably agree the best patch in the last year was boulders while mining being auto-chipped.

Loftar is 100x the programmer I'll ever be, but I made 1:1 the exact same thing as him and it took me MAYBE 5 minutes. That's not an exaggeration, the best patch in the last year could've been made by somebody with a fraction of Loftar's skill during a bathroom break.

There are 100 similar low hanging fruit that have been sitting there for literal years because I don't know why. Maybe fixing them the simple/obvious way would make some arbitrary number nobody even sees ugly or something.

Are you sure word "They" is correct there? I don't think so

Bro, I'm a pedantic dickhead with >2000 posts of mostly unconstructive criticism and even I think it's pathetic to give a fuck what Seatribe's distribution of labor is. All that matters is if the game is getting better and at what rate.

Loftar can spend 120 hours/week aimlessly rewriting entire classes for no reason and the only relevant output of that work is clients will break. I would 100000% prefer he only work for 10 minutes this week and use that time to disable winter.

The game is worse than it was 5 years ago. Why even complain about work quantities when the outcome of their work is always 1 step forward 2 steps back?

Best ways for ctribe devs to fix hafen:

1) remove a bunch of bad mechanics and confusing bloat (winter, siege chess fuckery, whales, oceans, meteors, many foods and animals, alchemy tbh) : impossible, not within their nature to kill their baby

2) stop adding shit altogether, can’t take 2 steps back if you stop moving entirely

…oh shit, we did it!

5 years from now we’ll be saying “haven is exactly as bad as it was 5 years ago” and that’s a win in my book

Something similar to what was implemented was in the custom clients for a while I think. They just really really don't like to give plebs a functional client. Like how many years before vanilla got a drinker. It's all intentional to keep Farmer Joan from uprising.

In my opinion, they game is a lot better than it was five years ago. Of course my purview of the game is fundamentally limited. I assume siege changes have greatly reduced the enjoyment of some, while it's been a slight improvement for players like me.

Massive improvements for me
  • Stacks
  • Cattle manager
  • Wood colors
  • Fox/Wolves dungeon
  • Quick item transfer
  • Thingwalls

Minor improvements
  • Bog turtles
  • New clays
  • Reeds
  • Horse knockouts
  • many things I can't remember

Things that are worse, but it's probably a good thing
  • Casting anvils and pans
  • Cave level mineral distributions

Stuff That feels bad and needs some love (not restricted to five years)
  • Credo quests
  • Winter
  • Credo quests AND winter
  • Arcane food recipes and calculations
  • Searching for high q nodes
  • Searching for high q nodes UNDERGROUND
  • Quest tree protection

You guys are often way to negative. I get that the forums have a bias towards negativity, but some people take it way too far. Venting frustration is fine, but at least try to not be mean when you do. Saying "ooga-booga devs bad" generates negative utility.

If I was a dev, stuff like that would make me think "fuck those guys" and reduce my motivation to make stuff better. Some people literally act like yelling at devs via keyboard is an effective way to generate change. Peeps wouldn't be here 10+ years later if they didn't love something from this game, please be nicer.

It's hard to see something I rly like get fucked by a dozen minor things that I could probably fix myself in a few days while the actual developers don't even recognize the issues / spend 6 months literally implementing intercourse with trees
