Thank you all for your feedback. I'll use rustroot extract and then send an alt in to check it out. No point risking it on my main.

My critique still stands though. The current "introduction" to mining is stupid. Also I am stupid. Two stupids don't make a smart most of the time. It would not hurt anyone if the game gave a one-time system message about how mining works kinda like how sailing a boat into deep sea says the boat will take damage.

My next post will be a plea for help dealing with the mystery of my missing ice. Where has it gone?? I sailed for an hour to find ice! Just kidding. xoxo

+1 for a Bone glue ‘primitive support’ (or leather or rope or w/e)

Mining could probably also use a “Beginner of” quest with a step to build one

For the time being though you can just use natural supports to get past cave wall roulette and get into the minesweeper which is fairly easy to interact with safely if you use your noggin

Being that a mine support takes metal, not really. Your options are very limited.

1. Be beyond lucky and find a natural pillar near ore
2. Grow a stone mushroom thing.
3. Tap the wall for 2-3 ore at a time and hope you get metal before the tile is depleted. (Only if ore node touches wall.)
4. Use alt to mine the first tile.

Is there a way I'm not thinking of to make it safe before you have metal, which, need I remind you, one must mine to get?
edit: (Ah, I forgot about the 'minehole near the node' method!)

You can start mining from a natural support and then proceed without supports once you know where cave dust is. We got metal early without any cave ins, mining alts or anything of the sort.
Also you can use rustroot above -1 to know where metal actually is and then just mine there from a natural support (or just do a no balls check and mine in the wall at random but yeah that's a risky endeavor.).

well the unsafe part of early mining is just the first tile, after that its just minesweeper, you could for example find an natural support, and snake your way through the walls untill they either get to hard, or you find ore,
or build an minehole, either directly intoo prospected ore, or just start minesweeping underneath your village unitll you find some,.

also you cant plant mushroom supports without reaching lvl3 so that isnt even an option,
