It functions as a pause in the game. Just check how the acitvity goes down during it. Developers forcing a gaming break on their gamers? Weird concept.
As for Mound beds: I find those are the best of both worlds. if you enjoy winter, you have the choice to not build those. I detest winter and can choose to build and enjoy my farm still. I would otherwise not bother to log on for winter, nor pay to play.
thats the point, winter is compleatly opt out for farmers currently, so there is no reason to complain about it anymore from your average player.
at this point the only ones still complaining about winter, are pvp players who are angery, that their variable speed script, and bunny slippers dont allow them to nodif chase intermediate noobs anymore.
whereas the players that think winter is cool, and has nice curios to pick up, since they dont outscale it with their abacus production or whatever yet, have 1-2 days of actual winter, where rivers are frozen over,
with 4-5 days , where its just fall , but without mushrooms or bears, and there is no snow yet, so no winter curios either.
the existance of moundbeds, should just make longer winters a non issue, as the people wo are actually affected by not b eing able to play (farmers and treeplanters) just dont have winter.
