Not making this game hermit friendly without having to resort to bots - steelmaking and all- at 300 pop is hilarious tbh. At this point there are probably 3 big villages in total and they are not trading. Do they have 40 players between them? This is such a bad design.

Why,not have the percentage complete decay rather then be reset to zero if the fire goes out ? Or just do like everything else where it holds its percentage unless

Because the speed up was a last minute changed and literally nothing was really thought out quality of life wise. Everything you have to actively do (or bot) is just as slow as ever, only the server time ticks are sped up which sadly results in steel "activity check" becoming a lot more punishing, it's not intended by the devs it's just a result of a wide sweep change that was never thought about beyond "haha let's make it all faster for crazy experimental world".

I think of it as a blessing in disguise, at least this way by turning everything to "max" it's easier to pinpoint what needs to be toned down judging by the cacophony

I'm in a village of 3 and being HST with a EU and NA player between we have our bases covered but even we still miss timers occasionally. All of us are working adults and can't frame our schedules around steel and silk in javagame. It is frustrating and mechanically nonsensical, there should be nothing stopping a hearthling from making a slightly bigger steelbox that can hold more fuel, god forbid give it to line-item for smith credo, bigger smelters and bigger fuel supply for steelboxes. Silkworms are easier to maneuver around imo, but still annoying because we plan our silkworms around our availability, where steel just feels like a, run it... if it dies, it dies. Start it again...
