Distance of a tunnel =/= ammount of metal mined from it.
Digging long, straight tunnels eats metal, i think that's simple enough. It has nothing to do with getting any metal back, you just stated you wanted to connect to a cave.

I still intend to build underground. But now it's going to take effort and funds (metal of course). As it was last world, it could've been just a by-product of mining.
Also i like how it makes caves more valuable, as they're big, cave-in free spaces that you don't need to waste metal to have. As you can't make free space underground so easily, they will surely see more uses.

Jorb streams good end of world showcasing his cave home. Makes changes to W11 so you can't have that too.

I'm totally fine with the IDEA that you need to repair supports. But the IMPLEMENTATION gets a strong 0/10 (have you even tested this shit?). Repairing 25% costs you more than placing a new one, supports going 100 to 0 in one prevented cave in. Not to mention that if you wanted that IDEA to work caveins should be occasional, not everywhere, like it is right now. And this not receiving a hotfix for more than a week baffles me to say the least.
Also vouching for cave tiles to never be a cave in, in sick and tired of prospecting being a fun Russian roulette event.

The big problem right now is that investing metals into it doesn't help. The mine supports are insufficient to even dig tunnels; they're basically Miner's Helms but only for a specific area (and if you're unlucky it collapses randomly and doesn't actually function). Ignoring the merits/problems of being able to mine out anything using supports for a moment, the real issue here is that mine supports are not useful for anything right now. They no longer do any of the things they were intended to do, and aspects of gameplay have been removed or harshly nerfed as a result.

On the topic of supports - just some ideas from short experience with mining:

1) If support destruction would not cause X3 AoE cave-in all around it would be manageable change. Right now unless you place multiple overlapping supports first one to break will cause cave-in on any tile that is not covered by other supports. I do understand *realism* argument, but sometimes adjustments should be made away from realism just to make game fun to play.

2) Decrease repair cost of supports so it is feasible to repair them. Right now repairing is significantly more expensive than building new one, but that is not feasible due to point 1.

3) Scale structural damage from prevented Cave-in with mine depth, so wooden support can survive 10 cave-ins on level 1 and 2 cave-ins on level 5. Make it so investment-reward ratio scales with depth (more and better ore in deep mines, hard to maintain supports in deep mines).

Pick options that you like the most. My personal choice is 2+3.
