Its not less work to make 3 cosmetic slot than to make one for each gear slot.
And if dye decome a thing, you'll need to put them in front of the gear you'd want to dye.

Its for cosmetics that DONT hide gear, like having dye that change color of merchant robe, or bunny ears placed above your fox hat, plaits that hang down your helmet, beards, fur collars, jewellery, rolex watchs, ..

That sounds pretty good, actually. Dyes for clothes would definitely be fun.
