The beast of burden you are thinking of are mules, the result of crossing a burro (donkey) and a horse. Would require an additional species of equine.

It would be logical to get donkeys from wild horses, and since they have common ancestors, it would be possible to cross them with each other, and with some degree of probability a mule would be born
