Haven releasing on Steam would be disaster. This game is not set up for casual gamers to jump in and play or for those who require tutorials.
It would get reviewbombed negatively and would only bring bad PR to the game

Tbh, one of the reasons I hesitate to send out e-mails at world start is that I fear the impact that might have on the server. We could, I suppose, send to some subset of the database for starters.

You'll never know until you try.

If you think limiting it is the best idea, then maybe those that have played in the last world.

The problem might be that a sudden bulk transmission could get the server spam-flagged on the large e-mail providers, which would be more than just a bit of a problem.

Isn't that already the case?
At least for character creation it ended up in the junk mail folder for Microsoft Live.
Unless being spam flagged means mails not even being transmitted by the mail providers, that's a fair concern.

I don't know when you last tried, but I improved the situation a while back by setting up proper DKIM authentication and such, and at least when I've tried, the registration e-mail make it through to GMail inboxes. Can't speak for Live.

While I would't know for sure, I doubt these anti-spam systems are stupid enough to not be able to connect subdomains with each other.

Account was created just yesterday, so it's recent.
More of a problem of course when there's a rapport between you and the players, for significant updates, or new worlds.

On topic though, the occasional mail would probably help with player retention too during the world runtime, a little reminder often goes long ways.

Please just send that e-mail once a year or two, when the world starts. I want my Haven be populated, not barren!
