Getting a buff from a god should be different to the belief sliders.
The sliders would give a multiplier, you got three carrots always, or just one when you were at either end (which you were).
Gifts from deities should be more subtle than that. Something that doesn't happen all of the time. For a mining god they might give you a nugget if they approve of your sacrifice to them, or if they like your prayer. The gods may at any time decide to give you some small buff that affects their area, or you could pray to them and ask for something, you could maybe get an item or a buff, or nothing. Favor would affect your chances.
Favor could be gained by your day to day activities. If you choose to follow the fighting god then you can gain favor by killing an animal, or fighting a player. The crafting god would of course be opposed to these actions, and you would loose favor by killing anything other than livestock, the mining god would be indifferent.
Favor could be lost over time, at a rate determined by when you last made a prayer/offering, at some inverse exponential rate to your total favor.
To switch religions should be possible, people get converted all the time. The buffs should be small enough to make it possible to play with no religion, and to still do any task effectively with any religion.
