I think doing it in this kind of way is a good thing, it adds more content and so long as you do what's required you aren't actually losing anything, I personally would find it fun - decay mechanics in general, without adequate alternative measures to combat it, do suck and are not fun, I've left two other games, along with hoards of others, due to introducing decay mechanics that take up all your in-game time fixing or that if you take a two day break you return to nothing!
There is a fine line between a game being hard and a game being so hard it's just no longer any fun.
