Ants, I believe replacing checkerboard with horizontal/vertical 1 pixel line might save tons of oil. And should look OK at least from default ortho cam distance.

I tested it and it doesn't always look ok, unfortunately.

I made this:

What my wallpaper was supposed to look like:

What it actually looks like:

Upon second inspection, it seems even checkerboard patterns might not always work. Here's a wallpaper, what it looks like in the forum preview and what it looks like in the in-game choose a pattern dialogue box:

I guess that's from the way the GPU scales the image, possibly it's just doing a pixel pick (instead of bilinear sampling or similar) so for the striped areas it only selects the color from only the even or the odd lines at certain target sizes.

Maybe loftar could fix that by using a different mapping mode for the texture, shouldn't be that difficult to fix (might give a little more work for the GPU though).
I think it would make sense to make a bug out of this so he can look at it after the world reset crunch time is over and he had a good nights sleep or two.

If your image is 512x512, it's gonna be pricey in terms of Oil.

If you cut it down to 256x256, you'll save a lot of Oil.

The more complicated (differing colors) an image is, the more it costs oil wise. I would imagine an image that is 512x512 were every other pixel is black and white would be the most expensive image possible. The color is just a percentage out of 100, nothing more from what I can understand.

Personally the cost is fine to me, simpler images require less oil, while more detailed ones need more.
