1.Catching up was not impossible in w10. It's a pain in the ass now thanks to the food changes, but back then with a good table and some good food you could get decent stats.
2.Losing is subjective. This is a sandbox game, there's more to do than trying to rule the world.

To stop a rage alt from bashing a cairn the defenders would have to wander deep inside the contested area, so I don't think people fighting along the edges would be a problem..
