Guess it depends on what you mean by history buff... I'd label SCA people more as "history geeks," ie like the people that show up to a Star Wars premier 7 days in advance to get tickets or the ones that always go to ComiCon and have to dress up. I know a lot who aren't or ever will be associated with SCA due to common perceptions of the organization. Add to that history buffs all have their time periods.

Cultures are a part of societies, and societies are a part of a larger civilization... there's a whole taxonomy of groupings of people if I recall that brush with anthropology I had 20 some years ago. I think we could say that the Vikings had an odd system of at times being an Empire under certain strong kings, and other times being more of a loose grouping of a particular civilization that roamed as they will. There was definitely a kingdom throughout their history that often expanded out over other territories other than what would be considered their core. This is the inherent definition of an "empire."
