If you were stupid enough to try to use the "Cribbing" support type to actually mine with, the entire mineshaft would suffer a total collapse because there's simply no space for the rocks to go except to hit all of the other supports.
It wouldn't just delete you... It'd delete your entire mineshaft, which would have to be excavated
diagonally because that would be more efficient for tile protection (doubling the amount of time to recover your character's body)
Spending one whole stockpile worth of wooden blocks (and maybe some chipped stones) to prevent a "lone assassin" cave-in from a cavern wall is a good starting option, because once you get metal it would be terrible, as it should be.
All that being said, it would be much nicer to see mining features that made mines look like... actual mines.
