I always had an easier time learning hotkeys this way. But then, I come old-school computing where everything was hotkeys and there were no menus to wade through to do things. And then there were productivity apps... Learning Lotus for DOS was a huge pain in the ass, and was a lot of just making random spreadsheets and playing with various functions and key combos to figure out what I needed to be able to do. Otherwise, the keyboard reference took as much time to look anything up. I realize this makes me an oddity and a bit of a dinosaur in computers, but when in doubt, just start hitting random keys... no, don't just start button mashing. Do it in a methodical method so you don't forget what you did.
@jorbtar: a scroll indicator of some sort next to the hotkey bar would be a great indicator that there is more than one hotbar that can be accessed. As is, no indicator doesn't give a clue to there being more.
