Just look at CF last world.
A change with such a big impact would certainly not be a waste of developer time.
A waste of developer time would be adding something with very small positive effects to the game overall like a new way to light fires.

Yet all the recent changes this world have been in complete opposition to encouraging world travel.

edit: I should say I completely agree with what you're saying. It just seems... too optimistic(?) given the current development direction

The problem is lack of incentive.
This idea would fix that without needing to look outside the game.
I travel around the world a lot myself because of forum/discord use.
I am conservative when judging ideas but this one is a gem. I am not being overly optimistic.
