Roads kinda do that as well, but at least you need effort to build them, so they are done only for crucial spots or in generic direction. Also, they can be used by anyone.

Clearly that is not the case, at least for teleportation when the milestone at the end is behind a locked gate.

The path of a road is between the turning points of the road markers (the downward arrow you see when you place them), not the markers themselves. Make sure that the path between these is free of objects (including the markers themselves) and the road will function.
