Bro I was there too, it did 100% wind up killing Ultima Online imo. Not immediately but ultimately it was it's downfall. Grinding the same dungeons over and over and over again for house decos and banksitting attire with no real danger is boring and not a viable model for a game like Ultima Online (or this one) in the long run, at least for a huge portion of the population.

I do not want to go back and forth. That is your opinion, I respect it, if you were there then you've been around. Trammel caused the boom, we were niche players when UO first came out and the fact that it was so hardcore was a barrier to entry. What extra content would there have been if Trammel never existed? Everquest, WoW and new shiny competition killed UO, choices in the market killed it. I would really prefer privately hosted servers, It just seems like that would be an easy model to implement and would work, imo.

To clarify, when I say Ultima Online died I meant OSI. There are still plenty of PvP oriented shards around today with thousands of players. PvP is literally the thing that's keeping Ultima Online, as a game, popular and alive more than 25 years later.

I do concede that new games and competition additionally contributed to OSI's downfall, of course.

I'm going to build a wall around all of your villages and I invite you to resolve the situation without leaving scents or attacking me. And yes, I will claim this wall with a snaking ring of banners.

ofcource there is only an small number of players that engage in pvp. cause pvp is as inaccesible as it gets. boarding up your base is easy. sieging is hard and tiresome. but actually being able to defend your sorry ass is as inacessible as it gets. not even talking about being able to compete. or get your hands on meteor.
if you would want to be able to at least offer some resistance to an powerfed titanchar with q400 b12 you would need too go through an amount of food, and recources for cycling waaaay beyond what an single player can do without help. not to mention that actuall combat experience and knowledge is hard to come by. exept you make alliances or some shit. aside form that. the price for loosing in pvp is harder for smaller groups to recover from-
if an pvper dies. he gets an state burial. and probably has 12 sets of spare gear, while higher q is in the making. assuming they dont keep 1-5 replacementcharacters down at the botfarm. if this wasnt the case, you would be griefed way more. the fact that 50% of players simply CAN´T
fight you is your saving grace. if pvp was something everybody could engage with. an lot more people would.
and its not about an subset of players, that only find joy in destoying you. destoying you is just fun. way more fun than an dungeon. and way more rewarding too.maybe you block an bearspawn. or pick pearls out of the pool . things like walls, siegetimers and whatever just function that way. they take out the fun of raiding you.

It's actually kind of hilarious. In classic haven shit was a lot harder, but the playerbase was really chill. Now that the game is a lot easier, the playerbase is toxic as fuck :ugeek:
