Roger, the coal quality is more important. However, is just he detail and not the key point of the mind-map diagrams. The key points are, that people need more ways to upgrade the quality of their things, that are capped by the pre-set qualities of the natural goods.
It might be not so fun for you, but others spend a lot of time grinding the quality and complain about the stat caps. But again, as I have stated before, there are a few villages that are spiraling their metal to get the high quality anvils and that was the only thing that have kept them in the game.
We have also been spiraling the troll kilns in legacy and had to do trades, digging and etc. to get better feldspar, ball clay, troll bones and etc. It is not compulsory for a common hermit that is happy with the medium quality anvil and clay he/she will get, but creates something to do for advanced factions. Moreover, it upgrades the quality of the items that are capped by the natural resources. That way, more trade goods are being created = more income for both factions and the devs.
