If those weren't all one hit kills this might be a viable option, but as it stands you can just run up to a chicken and use a 1/1 punch card and kill whatever critter won't fight back.

@ricky
pretty sure it's not one shot, at least for some of them.
Make friends with the other crabs or try to escape the bucket.

To be sure, during September, 408 characters have died, so people keep dying at a rate of about 20/day. Looking at a few random of them, only about half seems to be due to Asphyxiation, the others looking like various combat-related wounds. Also, most of them don't have names that are obvious throw-away-alts. Of course, I don't know exactly how they got to the point of dying so I don't have any stories or explanations, but nevertheless there they are.

That number is quite excessive when compared with the average player count. How many of those had developed skulls?

Also, it needs to be pointed out that lots of new animals received nerf demands. People once complained ants were too dangerous, that bats and badgers were too aggressive and walruses too OP. There were some people against crabs too and those things don't even fight. I recall snakes and bats were actually nerfed due to community pressure.

The wilderness is supposed to be unforgiving. So if slimes are really an issue maybe just make them not spawn on village claims or something like that.

Seems to me if you are down far enough to mine level 4 and 5, your character ought to be able to handle itself against minor threats. Crank out a little agility and put a couple points in UA/MC and go fight some foxes and bats until you get a hang of it.
This really just sounds like a case of refusing to learn mechanics and demanding they be removed. If you're mining that far down, you're at the point of the game you can afford to spare the resources to get a little better at self-defense. Or hell, just raise a low-investment hunting alt. Make a study table and a cupboard or two of pumpkin pies and honey buns.

In short: git gud.
“We still, alas, cannot forestall it-
This dreadful ailment's heavy toll;
The spleen is what the English call it,
We call it simply, Russian soul.”

An idea to consider: Tedium, a Feature.

With a bit of armor you can kill literally anything (aside from mammoths and trolls) by spamming either quick barrage or sideswipe
You don't even need to defend once you have a bit of ua

I run this on a potato of a computer that chugs at 1 fps at my homestead and I've seen aggro's trigger a couple second to 6 second freeze consistently- other than outright avoiding all combat where I don't have clear avenues of escape ie cheese ranged tactics, or getting a newer computer what would your recommendation be? I've been playing off and on a couple months and focusing on non-combat related skills since early game combat wrecks when you are unable to respond for that extra length of time- and sometimes I will have aggresive animals supposedly too far away aggro and freeze my screen before it even registers on screen(and don't ask about screen recording programs-I can't even have ring of brodgar wiki up in the background with the Amber client), seeing as I've been hoping to utilize the less information dense caverns to run combat tests I find it unfortunate that the lower caverns would have more enemies rather than simply stronger ones.

Obviously I want to get enough of an understanding of the combat system to see how the preformance update will Improve my playtime in the next world, since that's a world ending overhaul- but as tempting as it is to wait for the next world, I still enjoy playing, and would be disappointed if you rendered the game unplayable to individuals who have been able to limp through everything else by running a hermit game.

I hate the combat in this game and even after all these years I can't pretend to understand it ... but ...

Early game I avoid any kind of combat as damage to your character is costly, as soon as I have enough ua I go for bats and then work my way up through the food chain as my stats increase, my point being that even with no understanding of the combat here and only using it for hunting I can still kill anything without any difficulty once my stats are high enough and I have good armour. You don't need to understand it, you simply need to spam an attack and throw in a defence move if you feel like it, lol, combat against players is slightly different I think but for hunting all you need is stats and armour and a finger (for spamming) ... :D

Should probably point out I've not been on since the slime arrived so not fought any yet but I very much doubt it's any different ... though I see ppl complaining about the number of them but as Onep says if you can mine the lower levels then your char should be able to deal with them.

Combat aside ... if there are really a huge amount of slimes then I can see that would be annoying if you have to keep stopping what you are doing to deal with them.
