True, but even that bug raiding encourages people to keep things alt-vaulted (though my understanding is that people weren't that careful there, either).

Might be nice to remove it, but I'm also unsure whether the implications for the early game, for example, are really sound.

I think it's a simple as this: If you aren't able to kill the character, you don't deserve the items they can store in their inventory. Just as how you say that people will get bored of smashing noob hearths for berries, people can't be bothered to keep around 50 alts to store their entire bases stuff inside. If you destroy the walls you get to loot the base, if you kill their character you get to loot their corpse. people need at least some respite.

If you want more thieving mechanics in this game a better suggestion is to make it possible to lockpick gates. I personally hate the idea, but i think it's prefferable to having literally all my personal shit stolen. I'll admit i'll make 2 new storage alts immedieatly if it's implemented, but that just brings my number of storage alts up to 2 so you'd still be able to get at a lot of my stuff. EDIT: Note, if you only make it possible to loot hearthfires offclaim then i'd preffer that to lockpicking gates. But it's still a choice of plague or cholera.

And honestly, IF something is going to be done about alt-storing, then bots needs to be completely and utterly removed.
Imagine a dude who botted himself to god-stats comes and smashes your base and takes literally everything and you have to start over from q10. No, there needs to be some respite from these shitters.
You don't love something despite its flaws, you love it because of its flaws. Something that isn't flawed isn't meant to be loved.

Perfect things allow only for indulgence, never love.

Looting hearthfires isn't a good idea because you get your character rekt while you're offline. Nidbanes have 24 hr cooldown to give a chance for self-defense, and looted HF doesn't sound like something that gives some time for outplaying your opponent. I imagine average player (non-hardcore) to be prone to a mistake of having a non-visitor gate that leads to his HF. Sometimes even villages do that. That opens up a possibility for a single lad to steal all the equipment of said person/group - and then even if they log in, they have no means of self-defence against that guy.

Alt-vaulting isnt fun (and we did a mistake for not using that, getting robbed by a patient infiltrator) - but loosing your character's equipment offline is even less fun (it's possible for my group to rebuild, because instruments, weapons etc. left on characters who had them)

Hearth fires are already bashable. And by bashing hearthfire you can cause plenty of harm to the owner of it. Still people dont do it, because bashing hearthfires takes lot of time and effort.
Why would items dropping when the hearth fire is destroyed change this?
No, it wouldnt.

And as I said, if it really ruins everything, which it doesnt, it is easy to revert.

If character would be online during the destroying of hearth fire, the items wouldnt drop.

People do smash hearthfires, it's really not much effort. I've done it many times this world to get rid of alts and I've had no issues. If hearthfires were potential loot pinatas, I think they'd get smashed much more often.

It is safe. If you have several palisades, the worst thing someone can do with your scents is send out a nidbane. Nidbanes aren't much of a threat and if you use disposable crime alts (tampax alts?) it doesn't even matter if your character dies because it can be replaced quickly.

They likely are not. Early game (pre walls) combined with the ability of rushed characters to grab stuff from offline characters would be devastating.

IF Haven ever gets to a stable place where we never see a world reset, it could be turned off for the first 30 days or so, maybe a character could be protected from it for the first two weeks of play time... something.

Not sure I like the idea overall, but some things can be worked around.
