Why add another patchy system on top of the current ones when the removal of hunger would be much more universal and will not require fiddling every time some new strenous activity gets added.

Because of the energy system? That has been the case since forever, and hasn't changed.

Yes, because doing heavy labor taxes your energy by a large amount, so in response you eat food to get your energy up. This is a problem especially in the early game, because most people are just going to be eating grasshoppers and all kinds of shit just to keep their energy up which leads to their hunger going to shit as well. The players' solution is to make labor alts so they don't have to mess up their hunger on their mains.

+1 to removing hunger.

I agree with reasons given to remove hunger, but perhaps there are alternatives to explore.

For example being (over)stuffed (anything below 100% feasting efficiency) can cause energy recharge over time at the expense of hunger bar, with quicker energy regen the more stuffed the char is. Approximately top stuffing level (50%) should provide energy gain slightly below what is needed to keep typical hard work. While this would in a way restore the old hand plowing/running thing, it would be both limited to top stuffing levels and time gated so less abusable than old mechanics.

That would effectively increase energy value of foods, but would come with minor penalty to char development.

My issue with satiations replacing hunger is that it effectively gives another advantage to (bigger) groups, because groups can run more varied industries so will have access to more food groups than an average hermit.

An average hermit doesn't have any problem with variety. The problem is with mass production and getting those high end hunger bonuses from symbel items. We'll just have to see exactly how much those are worth in the coming weeks.
Opinions expressed in this statement are the authors alone and in no way reflect on the game development values of the actual developers.

That's still not a good enough reason to let your hunger go below 300%. If stat gain is your utmost priority, then regardless if the devs added the mechanic that you just suggested, people who are grinding their stats will still make alts so their hunger never goes under 300%.

Is gain per unit of food that much more important than gain per unit of time?

You may think stuffing your face is easy but someone has to make all that food and that entails a lot of shit extra fields, extra cheese racks extra bots... and when we're talking 3 times the work you better fucking believe it people will make an alt.

Gain per unit *is* gain per time. If you eat the same number of items in a day hovering in 300% range as you do hovering in 100% range you'll gain three times more stats in that day.
